Liposuction
Sometimes, no matter how much you exercise, unsightly or disproportionate deposits of fat remain on parts of your body. In women these deposits tend to settle on the tummy, buttocks, thighs, inner knees and below the bra line, while men are often troubled by excess adipose tissue on the abdomen and flanks.
Liposuction, or liposculpture, is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic procedures, and if done correctly it is one of the safest.
Liposuction can greatly improve your overall body contour and leave you more confident and comfortable.
Considering Liposuction?
There are some common questions that many people who are considering liposuction ask, such as:
Is it for me?
Liposuction is a very individualised procedure, and the outcome will be different for everyone. That is why before you make any decisions you will have a consultation with Dr Hunt to discuss your needs and goals for the surgery.
This is not a weight-reduction procedure, but a contouring procedure to remove localised bulges or fat deposits that are non-responsive to diet and exercise.
During your first consultation, Dr Hunt will evaluate your general health; explain the available surgical techniques, the risks and potential complications and your recovery time.
Dr Hunt will use a surgical technique that suits your specific needs.
* Suction-assisted lipectomy (SAL).
* Ultrasound-assisted lipectomy.
Photographs will be taken for your medical record and to allow Dr Hunt to fully plan your surgery.
Dr Hunt's assistant will prepare a quote for you, which will include the surgical, anaesthetic, and hospital fees. How is it done?
Liposuction is performed under a general anaesthetic, given by an anaesthetist, in an accredited hospital, so you are assured of the best care.
Small incisions are made in the desired area and different methods of fat removal are used to target specific areas.
You will wake up with foam dressings covered by compression garments over the site of your surgery.
There are risks with any surgical procedure; however, no long-term adverse effects have been reported as a result of liposuction. On rare occasions fluid may accumulate beneath the skin, and some patients experience some temporary numbness.
If you have poor skin elasticity you may develop some loose skin, though it is less than would be expected after having lost the equivalent amount of localised fat by dieting. When can I go home?
You may go home on the day of your surgery, or stay overnight, depending on the extent of the surgery.
When you go home you should limit your movements to around the house for 2 to 3 days.
When you are discharged you will be given a prescription for pain medication, which will minimise your discomfort.
You should take only the pain medication prescribed, and eat before you take it or it might upset your stomach.
Eat lightly for 3 to 4 days after surgery and then resume you normal diet. Make sure you get plenty of fluids.
Will I have to return for post-operative care?
You will return to see Dr Hunt 5 days after surgery.All sutures are dissolvable and do not need to be removed.
You will have follow-up visits at:
* 3 weeks
* 6 weeks
* 3 months
* 6 months
* 12 months
How long will I be off work?
You should plan on taking a few days off work.
When can I resume my normal activities?
You will feel tired and sore for 3 to 7 days after surgery.
Your compression garments must not be removed for 2 to 3 days.
After 3 days you may shower and replace the compression garments.
Compression garments must be worn continuously for 2 to 3 weeks, and then at night for a further 2 to 3 weeks. The compression garment helps define your body contour.
You may begin walking on the day of surgery, but the distance will depend on the extent of your surgery. You must not do any activities that increase your heart rate above 100 beats per minute for 3 weeks.
You can resume all exercise in 6 weeks.
When will I see the end result?
The benefits of liposuction are immediate, although as further healing gradually shrinks the skin the full benefits may take up to two months or more to be fully appreciated.
Remember, once removed the fat cells cannot return – you can say 'goodbye' to your old shape forever!
