Lower Body Lift

After significant weight loss it is not unusual for the skin to have lost its elasticity and be unable to adapt to your new shape. This can be a source of great disappointment after all the hard work that has been put into losing weight and can cause problems such as chafing.

Because most weight is usually lost from the lower body (buttocks, thighs, lower abdomen) a lower body lift can be a very effective way to remove the loose, hanging skin extending from the abdomen, around the flanks, as well as lifting the buttock and revealing the shape of the new you.

Considering a lower body lift?

Common questions asked by many people considering a lower body lift include:

Is it for me?
A lower body lift is a complex and very individualised procedure, and the outcome will be different for everyone. That is why, before you make any decisions, you will have an extensive consultation with Dr Hunt to discuss your needs and goals for the surgery.

During your first consultation, Dr Hunt will evaluate your general health and explain the recommended surgical procedure to achieve your goal, including the risks, potential complications and your recovery time. Photographs will be taken for your medical record and to allow Dr Hunt to fully plan your surgery.

A quote will be prepared for you that will include the surgical, anaesthetic, and hospital fees.

What's Involved?
A lower body lift is a complex surgical procedure. It is performed under a general anaesthetic, given by an anaesthetist, in an accredited hospital, so you can be assured of the best care.

During the procedure, incisions are made around your waist, across your lower abdomen and down your thighs. Excess skin is trimmed, muscle is tightened and any excess fat is removed. The skin is sutured in place with absorbable sutures. Often a tummy tuck is performed at the same time.

Drains are placed under the incisions and will remain in place for 7 to 10 days. The incisions are closed and covered and a compression garment is applied.

When can I go home?
You will stay in hospital for 5 to 7 nights following surgery. Once you are comfortable and able to get to and from a bathroom you can go home. At home you should limit your movements to around the house for a week or so.

When you are discharged you will be given a prescription for pain medication, which will minimise your discomfort. You should take only the pain medication prescribed, and eat before you take it to prevent an upset stomach.

Eat lightly for 3 to 4 days after surgery and then resume your normal diet. Make sure you get plenty of fluids.

Will I have to return for post-operative care?
You will return to see Dr Hunt several times over the few weeks following your surgery.

Dr Hunt will see you weekly for the first month and will then extend time between visits as you progress.

How long will I be off work?

You should plan on taking at least 3 weeks off work.

When can I resume my normal activities?
For the first 10 days after surgery your movements will be quite limited and you will have to walk carefully. As the skin gets used to its new position you will slowly regain your range of movement.

You will be taught how to care for the drain sites and incisions before you leave hospital.

Once the drains are removed you may shower.

Compression garments must be worn continuously for 2 weeks, and then during the day for a further 2 weeks.

It will take at least 3 weeks before you fully recover.

When will I see the end result?
The effects of a lower body lift are immediate, although the full benefits may take up to two months or more to be fully appreciated.

You will have some scarring on your abdomen and thighs. Dr Hunt will explain where your scars will be before surgery. It will take at least a year for the scars to mature and fade from pink/red to pale. Where possible, they will be placed so they are not visible in your swimsuit or underwear.
