The Latest Facelift and Necklift Technique - the MACS lift

The Musculo Apeuneurotic Cranial Suspension (MACS) facelift has revolutionized facelift surgery by delivering predictable, sustained results with less invasive surgery, faster recovery, and fewer complications.

A MACS lift will address the effects of gravity and aging on the face, improving deep creases between the nose and mouth, laxity at the jaw line and jowling, and folds and fat deposits that appear around the neck, by removing excess fat, tightening underlying muscles and redraping the skin of your face and neck.

Incisions usually begin above the hairline at the temples, extend in a natural line in front of the ear – or just inside the cartilage at the front of your ear – and continue behind your earlobe to the lower scalp. If your neck needs improvement, a small incision may also be made under the chin for liposuction.

A formal necklift (platysmoplasty) can rejuvenate the aging neck and is used in cases where there is excess skin and the platysma muscle has split and created vertical bands in the neck. This is done with a 3 cm incision under the chin.

A MACS (Minimal Access Cranial Suspension) lift is less invasive than other techniques. The results are equal to those that can achieved using more traditional techniques, however, your recovery time is much faster.

Definitive Rhinoplasty

As a craniofacial surgeon I have a particular interest as well as expertise in nasal surgery. The nose is the centre of the face and needs to be well proportioned to create facial balance.

The nasal airway must also be unobstructed allowing equal airflow through the left and right nasal passage. A definitive approach to nasal surgery addresses cosmetic concerns in addition to improving a patient’s breathing.

Four procedures are most commonly used:

Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is an operation performed on the external nose to improve its appearance, and balance the look of the nose on the face. In cases where people are born with a disproportionate nose, or following trauma where the nose been distorted, surgery can alter the size of the patient’s nose, change the shape of the tip, narrow the span of the nostrils, or change the angle between nose and your upper lip.

Septoplasty

Septoplasty is surgery on the nasal septum, and is performed to improve breathing through the nose. The septum can be congenitally deviated or displaced following trauma. Septoplasty aims to achieve even airflow through the left and right nasal airway. As well as correct crooked noses.

Rhinoseptoplasty

Rhinoseptoplasty is where a rhinoplasty and septoplasty are combined to maximize cosmetic improvement as well as address nasal airway obstruction.

FESS

Fibreoptic Endoscopic Einus Surgery will address pathology in the paranasal sinuses. In cases where the paranasal sinuses are involved with pathology I will perform this surgery in conjunction with an ear, nose and throat (ENT) colleague to ensure the patient achieves the best results.

This combined ENT/Plastic Surgeon approach maximizes the outcome for patients and minimizes their downtime.

Bright Eyes for Spring

As we age, the skin around the eyes becomes dry and sensitive, wrinkles, bags, and dark circles can develop.

Skin Pigmentation Solutions

Pigment, or melanin, is produced by the melanocyte cells in the basal layer of the skin. Excess pigmentation of the skin can be distressing for those affected, and is unfortunately fairly common in our sun exposed climate. There are a number of common causes for facial pigmentation and each will require an individualised approach to treat the problem.

Hormonal Pigmentation
Pregnancy and the oral contraceptive pill can overstimulate the melanocytes cells, causing them to produce too much melanin. This is known as melasma and the excess pigment is deposited in clusters called melanosomes in the deep layers of the epidermis. Pigmentation can appear on the forehead, cheeks, or upper lip.

Dark Circles
Dark circles under the lower eyelids are the result of red blood cells being deposited under the skin. This is due to the stretch on the tissues that swelling of the lids can cause.

Normal healthy skin is more than just the surface layers. All of the layers and their components may need treatment.

Aging in the skin begins at age 15 and is largely due to UV sunlight and the destruction it causes. This causes thinning of the skin, wrinkles and a dull complexion.

What is the absolute best product on the market to prevent wrinkles?
Simply put - a medical grade skin care program. Is there anything - ANYTHING - to eradicate dark circles under the eyes?
Dark circles are due to pigment from red blood cells that have leaked into the tissue and are breaking down. The best solution is a medical grade eye cream that employs agents to bleach the dark pigment.

How do you get rid of wrinkles without an eyelift?
Wrinkles around the eye can be improved non surgically by using Botox, and a skin care program to tighten the thin lax skin of the lower lid. This avoids the down time of surgery though for some individuals surgery is the best option.

Does wearing sunscreen actually prevent skin cancer?
Skin cancer is caused by UV light damaging the DNA of the skin cells. Sunscreen definitely minimises this process and will reduce the risks of developing not only skin cancer, but also the signs of aging.

How much of a role does sun exposure play in forming wrinkles?
Sun exposure is undoubtedly the greatest cause of wrinkles. The quality of the skin sadly begins to deteriorate after the age of 15, as the amount of Elastin and quality of the collagen is affected largely by exposure to UV light.

What would a Plastic Surgeon recommend for preventative skin care?

Intense Pulse Light @ The Sydney Skin Institute

IPL is a form of light therapy which is used for a variety of treatments, including hair removal, treating fine wrinkles, spider viens and removing sun spots.

Light flashes from the hand piece that is guided over the skin and is absorbed by the dark pigmentation (melanin) in the hair shaft or sunspot, which transforms into heat and causes permanent removal of the target cells.

Fair skin with dark pigmented hair or sunspots is preferred as there is less risk of hypo or hyper pigmentation, but treatment of people of dark complexion is possible.A series of four to eight treatments is usually recommended, but this depends on the individual. From years of treating numerous individuals I can say most people are surprised and happy with their results, you will never ever know till you give it a go.
