Dermal Filler – Everything you need to know
Dermal filler, a gel-based substance that’s injected into the skin, has become increasingly popular over recent years as a cosmetic and anti-ageing treatment. Dermal filler is often used on areas of the face such as the lips and cheeks to add volume, diminish the look of wrinkles, add symmetry and restore definition giving the patient a more youthful, rejuvenated appearance.
How long does the treatment take?
A typical dermal filler appointment can last between 15 – 30 minutes depending on how many areas the patient is having treated and how much volume is needed. As appointments are usually quick and convenient, many patients can have the procedure done one their lunch break and return to work afterwards.
Are dermal fillers painful?
This will depend on the individual and can vary from patient to patient, but there may be some discomfort during the procedure. Usually dermal fillers can be administered without anaesthetic as they already contain a small amount of local anaesthetic. However, depending on the area that is being treated and the pain tolerance of the patient, the injector can often apply a local anaesthetic or numbing cream to the area.
When will I see results?
Dermal filler results can be seen immediately, and they gradually improve 2-4 weeks after the treatment. Results typically last between 6-12 months, however as fillers are not permanent it is best to repeat treatments to maintain consistent results.
Are dermal fillers safe?
You sometimes hear of horror stories regarding dermal fillers that have been incorrectly administered, however these cases are extremely rare. As long as you go to a reputable injector, who is fully trained with lots of experience (like our lovely cosmetic nurse who has been practicing for over 15 years), then dermal fillers are extremely safe.
There are a few mild side effects that can occur after having dermal fillers such as redness and bruising at the sight of the injection
