What Can Mummy Makeover Do For You?

For most women, no amount of diet or exercise can restore a tummy or breasts that have been stretched and contracted through pregnancy and breastfeeding. It’s simply beyond the limits of our bodies’ capabilities for natural repair. That’s why so many women are asking for Dr Hunt’s help to get their pre-pregnancy body back. By combining tummy and breast procedures in one surgery session, a mummy makeover (or post-pregnancy makeover) can leave you looking and feeling yourself again.

Mothers who undergo a mummy makeover typically report a corresponding increase in self-confidence and an improved sense of psychological wellbeing.

Typical expected improvements from surgery include:

  • Removal of excess abdominal skin and fat
  • Centralization and tightening of the stomach wall muscles
  • Reducing or restoring breast volume and shape
  • Reducing the visibility of scars and stretch marks
  • Increased satisfaction with the overall body contour and shape
  • Replenishing the look and feel of your “pre-mom” form

What Procedures are Included in a Mummy Makeover?

breast surgery

Breast Surgery

(breast augmentation, breast lift or a combination of the two)

Some women’s breasts return to their original pre-pregnancy shape and size after giving birth and breastfeeding. However, this is the exception rather than the rule, and most women find their breasts are bigger, smaller, saggier or softer post pregnancy. As part of your mummy makeover, Dr Hunt will address these using one of the following techniques:

  • A breast augmentation
  • A breast lift
  • An augmentation mastopexy

Abdominoplasty

(tummy tuck)

Your abdomen stretches a huge amount during pregnancy and while it will spring back to some degree after you give birth, sometimes this is just not enough. Split abdominal muscles and over-stretched skin can leave you with tummy excess that no amount of sit-ups will shift. The solution is an abdominoplasty, or tummy tuck, to leave your stomach looking flat and fit.

abdominoplasty
body contouring

Body Contouring

Areas successfully treated by body contouring procedures include the neck, upper arms, breasts, abdomen, flanks, back, buttocks, hips, thighs, knees and ankles. As part of your mummy makeover, the following procedures can be performed:

  • Liposuction
  • Lower body lift
  • Massive weight loss
  • Thigh lift
  • Tummy Tuck
  • Upper arm lift

Is It Right For You?

This is a significant operation but is a well-tolerated one, and importantly, the results are long-lasting. The scars for the tummy tuck portion of the procedure can be hidden in the bikini line and are not usually obvious. This surgery requires particular surgical expertise to minimise potential complications and to achieve good aesthetic results.

We do not recommend this procedure for people who are:

  • Not able to have an anaesthetic
  • Prone to bleeding tendencies or have poor healing ability
  • Too high risk of having surgical complications

Surgery may be a good option for you if:

  • You are physically healthy and at a stable weight
  • You have realistic expectations
  • You are a non-smoker or have stopped smoking
  • You are bothered by the feeling that your body has been dramatically affected by childbearing

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it for me?

If you have been dieting, exercising and are still unhappy with your post-pregnancy body, a mummy makeover can be the ideal solution for getting your old breasts and tummy back – or even to improve on your pre-pregnancy figure!

What’s involved?

A mummy makeover is made up of two procedures performed at the same time – breast surgery, and a tummy tuck. Both will be performed by Dr Hunt under general anesthetic at your chosen hospital. Dr Hunt only works with the top Sydney anesthetists, so you are assured of only the very best care.

How much will a mummy makeover cost me?

Listing an exact cost for a mummy makeover is not possible because every patient’s requirements are different. A mummy makeover is one of the most customisable surgeries, so the only way to determine a more exact cost is to schedule a consultation with Dr Hunt. Once your goals and expectations have been discussed, Dr Hunt can tell you what you can expect to pay. The final cost will also take surgeon, hospital and anaesthetist fees into account. Along with the procedures you decide to include, the complexity of your makeover will determine how long the surgery will take, which will also affect the cost. If specific criteria are met, some patients are able to apply for a Medicare rebate, which will cover some of the costs associated with a mummy makeover. Procedures that are deemed medically necessary have a higher chance of qualifying for a rebate.

How long am I in hospital for?

Given that more then one operation is done at the same time I recommend that you stay in hospital for 2 nights as you may need a little more time to get mobile and will need some support from family and/or friends in the first few days post operation. It is important to have some help at home as you will be fatigued easily and you will benefit from practical support to do the basic activities such as shopping and cooking. If you have young children at home, it may be an idea to enlist help from family and friends in the first few days after you come home. It is, however, very important that you keep yourself mobile in order to reduce the risk of a blood clot in the legs and lungs as this is a particular risk after multiple surgeries and spending a longer time in the theatre. I recommend that you spend at least 15 minutes on your feet every 2 hours, except when you are sleeping! You will need to allow for some time off work and of course how long depends on the type of job you do. For an office-based job you can return to work in approximately 3 weeks or perhaps work some reduced hours after 2 weeks. If you have a more active and physical job, then it may help to be moved to a less active role for a short time while you recover.

Who should not have a mummy makeover?

As this requires you having multiple procedures under general anaesthetic (ie asleep) it is important that you are in good health to start with.

If you are on any medications that may affect your wounds healing, like steroids or immunosuppressants, then multiple operations at the same time may not be suitable for you.

If you are a smoker, or use a vape containing nicotine, then you should stop for at least 3 weeks pre-op and for at least 6 weeks post-op as it will have a marked impact on your ability to heal and increase your risk of blood clots and chest problems.

What are the risks?

Your surgeon will explain the risks associated with mummy makeover surgery in detail at your consultation.

Although the risk of complication is limited, as with all surgical procedures there are some common risks to be aware of.

The majority of these are general surgical complications, and include:

  • Nausea
  • Bleeding or Infection
  • Poor healing of incisions and scarring
  • Haematoma
  • Seroma
  • Fat necrosis or embolism
  • Loss of sensation or numbness
  • Pain

What should I expect during my mommy makeover recovery?

Following your mommy makeover surgery, gauze or bandages will be applied to your incisions. An elastic bandage or support bra will minimize swelling and support the breasts. A compression garment may also be used to control swelling in the abdomen, waist and buttocks.

You will be given specific instructions that may include:

  • How to care for your surgical site(s) following surgery
  • Medications to apply or take orally to aid healing and reduce the risk of infection
  • Specific concerns to look for at the surgical site or in your general health

Healing will continue for several weeks as swelling decreases and the shape of the breasts and abdomen improves.
