Who is an Ideal Candidate for Lip Volume Treatment?
To be considered for aesthetic lip enhancement, you should have:
- Good physical and mental health
- Lip shape unevenness
- A desire to improve the aspect of your lips
- Realistic expectations
- Thin lips
- Wrinkles on the side of your mouth when you smile
Cosmetic lip treatments are not right for you if you have:
- An active oral infection
- Bleeding or clotting disorders
- Severe skin sagging or wrinkling
- Unrealistic expectations
How is the lip enhancement procedure performed?
During the procedure, the practitioner will offer options for pain killers or analgaesia that will range form applying a numbing cream or ice compress to your lips, the use of Nitrous Oxide gas known as “happy gas”, or a local anaesthetic nerve block. Each has advantages and disadvantages and this will be discussed in the consultation prior to your treatment.
The practitioner will then inject a thin needle into your lips to administer the filler. Depending on the area needing treatment, the lip volume substance will be injected into the edges, centre of your upper lip, and corners of your mouth. On average, 1 ml will be injected, and the needle won’t go deeper than 2.5 mm to ensure optimal results. Depending on your lip condition, the entire procedure can take 30 minutes to 2 hours to complete.
After the procedure, you may experience swelling, bruising, and sensitivity in your lips as side effects. The discomfort usually goes away without any medical intervention after 24 hours to 48 hours. In some cases, you may need to wait up to a week for them to completely resolve the treatment plan. Once the practitioner has assessed your overall health condition, you will be allowed to go home, but you will need to return for follow-up after a few weeks.
