Thread lift swelling is an expected and common side effect that patients notice after their procedure.

It’s a normal reaction, as the tissues adjust to the threads placed beneath the skin and begin the process of healing. Swelling is part of the body’s natural inflammatory response, and although it can sometimes feel more noticeable in the first few days, it generally improves with time. That said, how long it lasts and what helps reduce it can vary depending on a variety of factors.

In this blog, we’ll explain what you can expect when it comes to swelling after a thread lift, as well as the factors that can have an influence on the process.

How soon does thread lift swelling appear?

Straight after a thread lift, swelling usually appears in the treated area fairly quickly. This is because the procedure involves inserting threads under the skin, which inevitably disturbs the surrounding tissues.

The body responds by sending extra blood flow and fluid to the area, which contributes to swelling. In the first 24 to 48 hours, this swelling is typically at its peak, and the treated areas can also feel slightly firm or tender.

By the third day, many patients find that the swelling begins to ease a little, although it can still be noticeable. Bruising may also appear around this time, which is another normal response to the procedure. Both bruising and swelling will gradually subside, though the timeframe can differ depending on the individual.

How long does swelling usually last after a thread lift?

For most patients, thread lift swelling tends to improve within the first week. By the end of the second week, it’s often reduced to a level that is far less noticeable in daily life.

In some cases, however, mild swelling can linger for a few more weeks. This is particularly true if a larger number of threads have been used, or if the treated area required more manipulation during the procedure.

While the majority of the swelling generally resolves within two to three weeks, it’s not unusual for very subtle swelling or small areas of firmness to remain for up to a month or slightly longer. These usually continue to improve on their own without the need for additional treatment.

What factors can affect how long swelling lasts?

There are a variety of factors that can influence how long swelling lasts. The number of threads used and the depth at which they were placed both play a role, as more threads and deeper placement can create a stronger inflammatory response. The area of the face being treated also makes a difference, as some areas naturally hold more fluid than others.

Individual healing responses are another factor. Some patients naturally heal faster, while others may be more prone to lingering swelling. General health, circulation, and lifestyle habits such as smoking or high salt intake can also affect how quickly the body clears fluid from the tissues.

How can you help reduce swelling after a thread lift?

There are a few ways to help minimise swelling in the days after the procedure. Cold compresses applied gently to the treated area during the first 24 hours can help by constricting blood vessels and limiting fluid build-up. Elevating your head, particularly while sleeping, can also make a difference as it allows fluid to drain away from the face more easily.

It’s important that you avoid strenuous exercise for at least the first week, as physical exertion can increase blood flow to the face and worsen swelling. Excessive facial movements, rubbing, or applying pressure to the treated area should also be avoided, as these can not only aggravate swelling but also affect the placement of the threads.

Hydration is another factor that can help. Drinking plenty of water supports circulation and helps the body clear fluid more efficiently. Reducing salt intake during the first week can also help to avoid unnecessary fluid retention.

How long until thread lift swelling is completely gone?

While swelling usually subsides to a manageable level within the first two weeks, it’s possible for small areas of firmness or residual swelling to remain for four to six weeks.

These are generally subtle and tend to be more noticeable to the patient than to others. Over time, the body continues to adjust to the presence of the threads, and any remaining swelling gradually fades without intervention.

It’s also important that you attend your follow-up appointments, as your surgeon will monitor your progress and check that the healing process is moving along as expected. If any unusual swelling persists beyond the usual timeframe, they will be able to advise you on the next steps.

How to know if your recovery is on track

The general pattern of swelling after a thread lift is that it peaks within the first two days, improves steadily over the first week, and is largely resolved within two to three weeks. However, it can naturally vary from patient to patient.

Mild residual swelling can sometimes linger longer but usually continues to fade on its own. As long as swelling is improving, even if slowly, it usually means the healing process is on track.

If anything feels unusual or the swelling seems out of proportion to what you were told to expect, it’s always best to get in touch with your surgeon. They can assess whether what you’re experiencing is within the normal range or if any further steps are needed.
