Risks of Non-Surgical Procedures

Managing the Risks of Cosmetic Treatments

Find out how you can help reduce your risks and avoid complications from non-surgical cosmetic procedures No cosmetic procedure is completely risk-free. Complications from non-surgical treatments can occasionally occur and may include side effects such as swelling, bruising, infection, or allergic reactions. In addition to these general risks, each type of non-surgical treatment carries its own specific potential complications. Most side effects are minor and temporary, having little impact on the final result. However, in rare cases, more significant issues—such as skin damage, vascular occlusion (for injectables), or long-lasting pigment changes—may occur and could require further medical treatment.

Risks and Side Effects of Non-Surgical Cosmetic Treatments

Non-surgical cosmetic procedures, while generally safe when performed by qualified practitioners, still carry potential risks. The type and severity of side effects can vary depending on the treatment, the products used, and the individual’s unique response. A comprehensive consultation with a trained health professional is essential to ensure you fully understand the possible outcomes, complications, and aftercare required before proceeding.

Below is an outline of common and less common risks linked to non-surgical cosmetic treatments:

Swelling and Bruising

Temporary swelling and bruising are common after procedures such as dermal fillers and anti-wrinkle injections. These effects usually resolve within several days but may last longer in some cases.

Redness and Irritation

Some clients may experience mild redness, sensitivity, or irritation at the treatment site. This usually settles within a few hours or days.

Discomfort or Pain

Mild to moderate discomfort at the injection or treatment site is not unusual. Your practitioner will advise you on suitable pain relief and aftercare measures.

Infection

Breaking the skin carries a small risk of infection. Practitioners follow strict hygiene standards to reduce this risk, and you will be given instructions for proper aftercare. Notify your practitioner immediately if you notice signs such as worsening redness, warmth, pain, swelling, or discharge.

Allergic Reactions

Although rare, allergic or hypersensitivity reactions can occur in response to some products. Be sure to disclose any known allergies or relevant medical history during your consultation.

Uneven or Unexpected Results

Outcomes vary from person to person. Injectable treatments may occasionally result in asymmetry, uneven correction, or small lumps. In some cases, additional treatments may be required to refine results.

Please note that before-and-after images or examples shown during consultations are based on individual cases. Your own results will depend on factors such as your anatomy, the treatment plan, and your healing process.

Vascular Occlusion (Injectables)

In rare instances, injectable products can inadvertently block a blood vessel (vascular occlusion). This is a serious complication that requires urgent treatment. Warning signs include severe pain, changes in skin colour, or skin breakdown. Seek immediate medical attention if you notice these symptoms.

Skin Changes or Scarring

Changes in skin texture or scarring may occur, although this is uncommon and often linked to infection or improper aftercare.

Pigmentation Changes (e.g. following lasers or peels)

Some treatments can cause temporary changes in skin colour, including darkening (hyperpigmentation) or lightening (hypopigmentation). People with darker skin tones may be at a higher risk. In rare cases, these changes can be permanent.

Delayed Nodules (Injectables)

With certain injectable products, small inflammatory nodules may form weeks or months after treatment. These may require further treatment, which could include medication or referral to a specialist.

What You Should Keep in Mind

  • Results differ for each individual – Your anatomy, lifestyle, and healing response all influence the outcome.

  • Informed consent is critical – Your practitioner will explain all risks, benefits, and expected outcomes before treatment.

  • Aftercare matters – Following your practitioner’s instructions is vital to support healing and minimise complications.

When to Seek Medical Advice

If you experience unexpected side effects or complications after your treatment, contact your treating practitioner as soon as possible. For any urgent issues, seek immediate medical care.

The length of your recovery period is dependent on many factors, such as:

  • the type of procedure you had
