The recovery timeline after a mini facelift can vary quite a bit depending on the individual, but there are a few general timeframes that can help you understand what to expect.

While it’s a less extensive version of a full facelift, a mini facelift still involves incisions, tissue repositioning and some swelling and bruising afterwards.

If you’re planning to undergo a mini facelift, it’s helpful to understand how long the physical signs of surgery might be present, when you’re likely to feel comfortable again and how long it takes before you’ll see the final results.

What should you expect in the first week?

The first week after a mini facelift is when most of the initial swelling and bruising tends to develop. You’ll usually go home the same day as your surgery, once your surgeon has checked in and you’ve had a chance to recover from the anaesthesia. Your face will likely feel tight and sore, which is to be expected straight after this kind of procedure.

During these first few days, it’s important that you rest with your head elevated, avoid any heavy lifting or bending over, and follow any care instructions provided by your surgeon. There may be dressings, and, in some cases, drains depending on how the surgery was performed. Swelling often increases over the first 48 to 72 hours before it starts to gradually go down.

Bruising and swelling are the most visible signs of surgery during this stage. They can look more intense before they begin to ease off, and that’s a very normal part of the process. Around the end of the first week, you might begin to notice that things are starting to calm down slightly, but you’ll still be in the early stages of recovery.

When can you return to daily activities?

Most patients can start getting back to light activities within about seven to 10 days. This usually includes things like going for short walks and doing tasks that don’t involve bending, lifting, or too much movement of the neck and jaw. If you work from home or have a desk job that isn’t too physically demanding, it’s sometimes possible to return to work during this second week.

However, even if you’re starting to feel a bit more capable, swelling may still be noticeable, especially around the jawline, ears, or under the chin, and there may still be bruising. Some patients choose to wait until the third week before going back to work.

How long until bruising and swelling subside?

Swelling tends to last longer than bruising, with some swelling still present even after the first few weeks. Most of the visible swelling and bruising usually improves noticeably by the end of week two or three. Makeup can sometimes be used to cover discolouration once the skin has started healing.

That said, mild residual swelling can continue for longer, particularly around the lower face and jaw. It might not be very obvious to others, but you may notice puffiness or a tight feeling. This is normal and will usually settle with time.

When do the results become noticeable?

You’ll start to notice some changes in the shape of your lower face quite early on, sometimes even within the first week. However, because of the swelling, most patients start to see what the results will actually look like after about four to six weeks.

Any unevenness, puffiness, or tightness tends to soften gradually. Around two months post-op, the face usually looks less swollen, and the scars become less visible. While the healing is still taking place under the surface, this is often when patients start to recognise the longer-term effects of the procedure more clearly.

How long does it take for scars to fade?

Mini facelift scars are typically placed around the natural contours of the ear or hairline, making them easier to conceal once healed. These areas may appear slightly red or raised at first, especially during the first few weeks. However, over the following months, the redness tends to fade, and the scar becomes flatter and paler.

Most mini facelift scars continue to mature and fade over a period of six to 12 months. Even if they’re healing well, it’s still important that you avoid direct sun exposure to the area while the scars are fresh, as this can affect the long-term appearance. You can speak with your surgeon about when to start using silicone-based scar treatments or gentle massage techniques if they feel this might be helpful in your case.

When can you exercise again after a mini facelift?

Strenuous activity, including gym workouts, running, and anything involving repetitive movement or heavy lifting, usually needs to be avoided for at least four to six weeks after surgery. This allows time for the internal tissue to start healing properly without disruption. Even once you’re feeling physically fine, it’s important that you avoid rushing back into intense activity too soon, as it can contribute to increased swelling or even affect the incision sites.

Light walking is generally encouraged early in the recovery period, but anything beyond this should be discussed with your surgeon first. When you do reintroduce exercise, it’s best to start slowly and build up gradually, especially in the first six to eight weeks.
