The mons pubis is the layer of fat covering your pubic bone. It’s in the shape of an upside-down triangle and extends from your genitals to the top of your pubic hairline.

A monsplasty surgery can lift and tighten your entire upper pubic area. During a monsplasty procedure, Dr Hunt will:

Vigourous Exercise and Activities such as weightlifting, running, sports, and motorbikes must be avoided for six weeks or more after the treatment. Always consult your surgeon before starting these activities.
Things to keep in mind after the surgery:
Most Importantly – Do Not Smoke, Vape or Take Recreational Drugs during your recovery period. Bad things can happen, your wound could become infected, split open (dehiscence) or your skin could die (skin Necrosis).
· Adopt a Healthy Diet and Lifestyle – Nutrition before and after surgery
Good Nutrition is vital for good results and helps the healing process during recovery. Eat well in the months before surgery. Organise and prepare healthy nutritious meals in advance that are low in sodium and loaded with fibre & protein. Excess sodium can lead to fluid retention and prolonged swelling. Drink enough water to keep your body well-hydrated and kick-start the healing process.
· Wear your Support & Compression Garments
You will be asked to wear a compression garment for a specified time duration post-surgery. It helps reduce post-operative swelling and offers adequate support to the abdomen. Post-surgical garments help promote healing and recovery. Make sure to wear it for at least the first four weeks or as instructed by your surgeon.
· Incision Care
Your incisions will be covered by a surgical dressing and bandage to offer protection against the external environment. Your surgeon will guide you regarding wound care. Keep the wounds clean and dry at all times and be very gentle. If you experience abnormal swelling, intense pain, and discharge, immediately get in touch with your medical team. Avoid hot baths until the incisions heal.
· Wound Drain Care (if req)
In some cases, a temporary drain tube will be placed near the surgical site to get rid of the excess fluid. It is used as required. Take care of it properly and empty out the drains as instructed by your surgeon

What to Expect with Recovery after Tummy Tuck/ Abdominoplasty Surgery
Here is a timeline to follow post-surgery and suggested activities after the surgery
Week 1 to 2 Post Tummy Tuck – abdominoplasty
It is very important to wear your compression garment for the first four to six weeks post-surgery. For the first two weeks, you will be required to wear it 24/7. A compression garment helps minimise swelling and improves the results of the surgery. Make sure to gently walk around the house for 10 to 15 minutes a few times a day. It helps prevent blood-clot formation and can improve blood circulation.
Week 3 to 4 Post Tummy Tuck- abdominoplasty
Continue with light walking. You can also begin with cycling on a stationary bike. Stay clear of all sorts of strenuous exercises and workouts that target your abdominal muscles. These include sit-ups, crunches and heavy lifting. Before starting any kind of workout, get your surgeon’s approval and ensure it is suitable for you. Do not go to the gym just yet.
Week 4 to 6 Post Tummy Tuck – abdominoplasty
Most patients can start low-impact exercise routines if your surgeon approves. Generally, low-impact aerobics, long walks, low weights, and gentle Pilates movements can be resumed now.
Week 6 to 8 Post Tummy Tuck – abdominoplasty
Most patients are able to do all sorts of activities at this point during the recovery phase. Moderate swimming, running outside, and walking on a treadmill helps. You can also start incorporating body strengthening exercises. Avoid putting excessive strain on the incision site. Don’t try to get back to your busy routine and exercise program immediately. Slow and steady wins the race when it comes to exercising post-surgery.
Week 8 Post Abdominoplasty
If you are healing well, your surgeon may give you permission to resume your full exercise routine. It is important to avoid martial arts, boxing, Cross Fit, F45 and anything of similar intensity. You have to wait at least three months before resuming high-intensity activities in the gym or at work.
Driving Post Abdominoplasty Surgery
You need to take at least two weeks off from work after the abdominoplasty surgery. This will give you enough time to rest and recover. The recovery varies from person to person and each individual will recover at a different pace. It is important to be very patient with yourself and follow your surgeon’s instructions as closely as possible.
It is important to avoid driving post-surgery during the initial four weeks as it can put a strain on your incisions and internal wounds. Here are a few reasons to avoid driving:
You will NOT be able to drive once you are discharged from the hospital as you will still be under the effects of anaesthesia (Someone responsible will be needed to drive you home)
The surgery can lead to some pain and exhaustion and driving immediately post the surgery can be dangerous for you.
Even a bit of pressure on your incision site could lead to increased discomfort and can cause pain, a seroma or delayed healing
If you are able to sit comfortably in a car, open the door without trouble, don’t experience any rubbing or pressure due to the seatbelt, are able to turn the wheel comfortably, and are able to make an emergency stop in case of a sharp turn or to prevent accidents, you should be OK for driving but always check with your surgeon.
Swimming after Tummy Tuck – Abdominoplasty Surgery
You must recover fully before you start swimming again. In most cases, your surgeon will allow you to resume swimming once the initial 8 weeks have passed. If you start too soon, you can increase the risk of wound infections. Open incisions will allow the germs to seep through and make you more prone to nasty infections. It can further lead to the splitting of incision sites which leads to delayed wound healing, bad scarring and complications.
During the first few months, you need to be cautious while taking a bath. The goal is to keep your incisions clean and dry at all times till your incisions heal fully. Always consult Dr Hunt prior to resuming swimming, diving in hot tubs, going to saunas and even taking hot baths.
Intimacy and Sex after Tummy Tuck – Abdominoplasty Surgery
The abdominoplasty surgery not only involves the removal of fat and skin but can also include the stitching of abdominal muscles. You will have sutures and incisions and your skin will be quite tender. That is why the recommendation is to avoid sexual activities post-surgery until you feel comfortable. Use your stomach to prevent your spine from moving. When it becomes easy and pain-free for you, move on to the next exercise. Repeat this exercise 10 times a day and complete 3 sets. Repeat twice a day.
3. Brace Marching
Lay on your back and keep your knees bent. Perform the transverse abdominis contraction. Slowly raise one foot a few inches above the ground and put it back downwards. Perform the same exercise on your other leg. Make sure that you aren’t moving your spine. When the exercise becomes easy, move on to the next workout. You need to repeat this work out 10 times a day and complete 3 sets. Repeat twice a day.
4. Brace Single Knee Extension
Lay on your back with your knees bent and perform the transverse abdominis. Straighten out one knee and keep your leg off the ground. Hold this position as indicated and return the leg to its original state. Repeat on the other leg while keeping your stomach muscles contracted. Repeat this workout 10 times a day and complete 3 sets. Doing this workout once a day is more than enough.
Things to Avoid if You Have Split Abdominal Muscles
You need to avoid certain exercises that will put pressure on your abdominal muscles like crunches.
In fact, you should also avoid planks, sit-ups, and other forms of workout that increase abdominal pressure.
This is the exact opposite of what you want. It is best to do significant research regarding post-partum workouts. Ask your doctor in detail regarding all the things you need to avoid post-surgery and all the care measures.

In certain cases, the trouble breathing is not caused by compression garments but by not breathing right.
Breathe the Right Way
As you breathe, three parts of the body are involved in the process: the intercostal muscles, diaphragm and abdominal muscles. When you are breathing in, the muscles contract upwards and outwards and allow your lungs to expand fully with air. During this time, the diaphragm will move downwards to create space for your lungs. If you are breathing properly, your chest will rise and widen along with the expansion of your stomach. And you will feel a lot more comfortable.
Belly Breathing
Over the years, the belly has become more common as we have become lazy with how we breathe. Instead of involving all three parts with every single breath, we use only our stomach to breathe. Look closely at how you breathe. If your stomach expands and contracts while breathing but your chest isn’t moving, you are belly breathing. If you are belly breathing, you will find it difficult to breathe while wearing a compression garment. You shouldn’t rely on your stomach to breathe in the air. Your stomach won’t expand because of the constant pressure on your compression garment.
If that’s true, you need to be conscious about how you breathe. Make sure you feel your rib cage expand with every single breath and along with the diaphragm and abdominal muscles.

1. Vitamin E and massage the scar
Apply topical vitamin E on your scar once your incision heals fully to keep it moisturised. Be sure to choose pure vitamin E oil. Make sure to apply it once a day to your scar for the first couple of months and massage gently. Research shows that Vitamin E oil can help minimise the appearance of scars when used regularly over a long period of time. Surgeons will often advocate the use of one or both of these for a period following surgery to improve the final result of a scar. Silicone Gels and tapes may also be useful.
4. Skin Needling or Laser Treatment for Scar Minimisation
There are plenty of skin needling or laser treatments available to target the scars. Laser skin resurfacing is one of the options to improve the texture and colour of the scars. Dermapen or Skinpen may also help with Collagen induction therapy.
Laser technology can resurface the skin. Scarred skin is replaced with healthy collagen which improves the overall texture and colour of the scar. If you decide to proceed with these treatment options, you might get two to three sessions over the course of a few months.
5. Steroid Applications and Injections may help thick or keloid scars
Some patients decide to opt for steroid applications and injections to help any raised, thick, red scars – preventing keloid scarring. They might be used by your surgeon at the time of the surgery as a preventative measure or a few weeks after for correction. The cost of these essentially depends on the size and severity of the scar. On average, expect to pay a few hundred dollars per treatment.
6. Surgical Scar Revision
If the scar is not maturing as expected and is excessively raised, stretched, or pigmented then scar revision can be an option. This needs to be assessed and discussed with your surgeon as the timing of surgical scar revision will vary in people with different skin types. Your surgeon will most likely combine topical treatment, minimally invasive procedures and a surgical revision to bring about the desired results.
Please note that with surgical scar revision, you might have to wait a bit longer to get the treatment. Most patients are advised to hold on for around one year before opting for surgical scar removal options.
Consider the Pros and Cons of Abdominoplasty

Once you are fully healed, you can start exercises that focus on your abs; sit-ups, crunches, and planks. Make sure to check in with your surgeon prior to working out to make sure you don’t cause any complications.

It’s normal for the area to look swollen and even a bit crusty after surgery. It will heal over a few weeks, but the appearance will continue to improve over months. Your surgeon will give you detailed instructions on how to care for the area such as cleaning the area with saltwater solution and keeping it clean and dry at all times.

Swelling post-surgery is very normal and expected. Your blood vessels and lymphatic vessels work as a drainage system for fluids. What Is a Mini Tummy Tuck/ Abdominoplasty?
A mini tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) is an abdominoplasty that removes lax skin and accumulated fat mainly in the lower abdomen. It is considered a less invasive procedure than a full abdominoplasty. A full tummy tuck/ abdominoplasty surgery can fix your postpartum fat deposits, abdominal hernia, and muscle laxity in the lower abdomen.
After pregnancy or weight loss, you can lose muscle tone and skin elasticity in your abdominal area. For some people, the problem area is restricted to the lower part of the abdomen:
Extra fat and loose skin below the belly button
Muscle laxity under the navel
The mini tummy tuck/ abdominoplasty addresses the area below the belly button.
How Is a Mini Abdominoplasty Different from a Full Tummy Tuck/ Abdominoplasty?
Both the full abdominoplasty and mini abdominoplasty are designed to remove loose skin and fat build-up from the stomach area. They both tighten the abdomen and make it flat again.
However, unlike a full tummy tuck/ abdominoplasty, a mini abdominoplasty:
Involves a smaller incision (around 15-20 cm long) that doesn’t go all the way to the sides of the hips
Removes less skin and fat compared to a full abdominoplasty
Only works on the lower abdomen; it does not address the upper abdomen
Does not reposition the belly button
In general, a full abdominoplasty works on a larger area of the stomach than a mini abdominoplasty, which focuses on the lower parts of the stomach. In addition, a full abdominoplasty involves a longer incision and more skin and fat removal than a mini abdominoplasty.
Who Needs a Mini Tummy Tuck/ abdominoplasty?
A mini abdominoplasty procedure can be suitable for people who have lost weight or given birth but are not able to lose stubborn lower belly fat with diet and exercise.
This procedure often suits candidates who:
Are thin but have excess skin and fat above their pubic area
Have a small pouch of fat at the front of their lower abs
Have a flat upper tummy with a lower belly bulge
Are satisfied with the way their upper abdomen and hips look

What Are The Benefits of a Mini Tummy Tuck/ abdominoplasty?
In case you have minimal loose skin in your lower abdominal region, a mini tummy tuck/ abdominoplasty procedure can offer the following advantages over a full abdominoplasty:
Less invasive (less skin and fat removal)
Smaller incision and a smaller scar
Less demanding (takes less time, about an hour and a half)
Can pull the belly button down (this can work for women whose belly button is shifted upwards in an abnormal position after pregnancy)
Despite being a less demanding procedure, a mini tummy tuck/ abdominoplasty needs great surgical skills to perform successfully. Also please note that the benefits of the procedure may not apply to everyone, and you should thoroughly discuss your expectations with a surgeon before you make your decision.
How Is a Mini Tummy Tuck/ Abdominoplasty Performed?
A mini abdominoplasty surgery can be performed under local or general anaesthesia. During the procedure, Dr Hunt or Dr Maryam will do the following:
First, a horizontal incision (around 15-20 cm long) is done, similar to a C-section incision, really low down the abdomen just above the pubic area (along the bikini line)
After that, your surgeon will separate the fat layer from the deep muscle layer, all the way up to the belly button without repositioning the navel
Following this, the deep abdominal muscles and connective tissue are pulled tightly together and held together with strong sutures
Afterward, your surgeon will be able to pull the overlying skin and fat downwards to repair the stretched abdomen and flatten the stretch marks
Then, excess skin and fat (usually a minimal amount) are cut out
Lastly, your surgeon will suture the skin back together using fine sutures
A mini abdominoplasty surgery usually lasts between one and a half to three hours. After your surgery, your wound will be covered by wound dressing and you will be transferred to the recovery room.
Recovery after a Mini Tummy Tuck/ abdominoplasty
Mini abdominoplasty is less demanding than a full abdominoplasty, hence it often has a shorter recovery time. But you’ll still need to take your recovery seriously and follow instructions so that you don’t increase your risks. During your postoperative recovery from a mini tummy tuck/ abdominoplasty you can expect:
Belly swelling: most of the swelling subsides within 4 to 6 weeks. After that, a minimal amount of swelling remains that could take a few more months to resolve
Bruising: bruising in your abdomen will peak during the first few days following your surgery before resolving around 2 weeks later
Pain: postoperative pain might be experienced during the first week following the surgery. The pain and discomfort should completely subside 2 weeks after your mini tummy tuck/ abdominoplasty
You might have to stay for a night at the hospital for observation after mini abdominoplasty surgery
Your surgeon may place drains underneath your skin to prevent fluid accumulation. These are normally taken out a couple of days later
You might be asked to wear compression garments for two to six weeks to speed up your healing after mini abdominoplasty
You can usually return to normal activity, like working and driving, within about a week following your surgery
You will mostly be able to go back to all forms of exercise, including heavy lifting, at about six weeks after a mini tummy tuck/ abdominoplasty
Every patient will have a slightly different recovery timeline after their tummy tuck/ abdominoplasty surgery depending on the extent of removed skin, age, body weight, and overall health condition. Nevertheless, full recovery after a mini abdominoplasty usually takes about 4-6 weeks.
Your surgeon will follow up with you for a couple of months after your mini-abdominoplasty surgery to make sure your wound is healing nicely and your scar continues to improve.
Potential Risks and Complications of a Mini Tummy Tuck/ abdominoplasty
Just like a full abdominoplasty, a mini abdominoplasty can have some complications including:
Seroma (fluid build-up under the skin): drainage tubes, and sometimes a syringe, are used to remove the accumulated fluid after your surgery
Hematoma (blood collection under the skin): some bruises after surgery are a result of pooled blood under the skin
Skin numbness: the incision and repositioning of skin and muscles in your abdomen can affect the nerves in that area. The reduced sensation or numbness lasts for a few weeks after surgery
Wound infection: it’s very important to inform your surgeon about any redness around your wound, excessive swelling, chills, or fever. These could be signs of postoperative wound infection
Skin necrosis (rare complication): injury to some blood vessels during surgery could disrupt the blood flow to the skin surface. This causes skin tissue death known as skin necrosis

Solving problems of body lift (belt lipectomy) surgery
A popular procedure for post-weightloss patients known as a lower body lift or belt lipectomy provides removal of excess skin circumferentially. It can help with 360 degree body contouring. Over time and with ongoing follow-up with our patients and their results, we found that patients often end up with a flat appearance at the buttocks, which can be an aesthetic worry for some patients.
From this, the buttock augmentation flap has become an important part of Dr Hunt’s approach to this procedure.
360° Body Contouring
As a Specialist Plastic surgeon and aesthetic cosmetic surgeon, Dr Hunt appreciates that patients want to look good from all angles, that is, from front to back and the sides, and to achieve this, the patients might undergo a form of 360° body contouring, be it with liposuction, abdominoplasty or body lift (belt lipectomy), often with a buttock augmentation. As part of this, the buttock is an important aesthetic element and has certainly increased its profile.
Why is the buttock augmentation flap done?
Sometimes, when patients undergo a circumferential lower body lift or belt lipectomy, they can end up with a flat buttock appearance that they don’t want. The removal of excess skin over an area that has already lost volume due to weight loss can result in this appearance. This can be a problem aesthetically, and it can also cause problems as there is nothing for patients to hang their trousers on. With the evolution of surgical techniques, we have developed a method to reduce this problem and give patients a better chance at getting a result they’re pleased with.
Case 1 – Body lift (belt lipectomy) Patient – NO Buttock Augmentation

Lower body lift (belt lipectomy) alone can produce a flatter appearance, compared to the surgery done with buttock augmentation flap.
Options for Buttock Augmentation of Body lift (Belt Lipectomy) Patients
1. Buttock implant
A buttock implant made of silicone is an option. However, it is quite often fraught with difficulties as the implant can become displaced or malpositioned, and patients often do not desire an implant.

2. Fat transfer to the Butt (Bilateral Buttock Augmentation)
The fat transfer or bilateral buttock augmentation, also known as the Brazilian butt lift, was particularly popular until it was identified that it carried a significantly high risk of complications and potential death. The issue is that when the fat transferred enters the circulation and becomes lodged in the heart or lungs, this can be fatal. The popularity of this procedure has decreased in recent times due to the high-risk profile.

3. Buttock Autologous Fat Flaps
When doing a circumferential lower body lift (belt lipectomy), the excess tissue above the beltline on the lower back will be discarded. The option exists to utilise this excess fat, though as a form of buttock implant made from the patient’s own tissue, and has the advantage as it has a fully intact blood supply, increasing the chances that it will survive the procedure.
This Autologous Buttock Augmentation Flap is Dr Hunt’s preferred choice following abdominal contouring after massive weight loss.
